As usual, Torvalds announced the latest stable release of the Linux kernel on Sunday evening. It was on time and about two months after the stable 5.17 release, thus opening the merge window for Linux 5.19. Torvalds had little exciting to say about Linux 5.18 but still encouraged developers to run it. “I’d still like people to run boring old plain 5.18 just to check, before we start with the excitement of all the new features for the merge window,” wrote Torvalds....

Larry Cashdollar, a member of the Security Incident Response Team at Akamai Technologies, explained that Zyxel may have been specifically targeted because they published a blog noting they were impacted by the Log4j vulnerability. “The first sample I examined contained functions to scan for other vulnerable devices,” Cashdollar wrote in an Akamai blog post. “The second sample… did contain the standard Mirai attack functions,” he added. “It appears the… attack vectors had been removed in favor of Log4j exploitation....

Earlier this week, Microsoft admitted that the expired certificate broke built-in Windows 11 features including the snipping tool, touch keyboard, voice typing, and emoji panel. It also affected the locked down S-mode variant of Windows. The certificate expired on October 31. “We fixed a known issue that might prevent some users from opening or using certain built-in Windows apps or parts of some built-in apps. This issue occurs because of a Microsoft digital certificate that expired October 31, 2021,” says Brandon LeBlanc, a program manager for the Windows Insider team....

WVD, an Azure-based service, enables users to virtualize their Windows desktop, Office apps, and other third-party applications by running them remotely in Azure virtual machines. In an email to its customers, Microsoft admitted to the security flaw in Microsoft Azure’s flagship Cosmos DB database. The vulnerability first introduced in 2019 when Microsoft added a data visualization feature called Jupyter Notebook. This feature was then turned on by default for all Cosmos DB users in February 2021. “We fixed this issue immediately to keep our customers safe and protected.
