The 51-page report from the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee calls on the government to swiftly implement new mandates for federal agencies and critical infrastructure organizations to report ransomware attacks and payments to attackers. The 10-month investigation, which focussed on the role of cryptocurrency in ransomware payments, found that reporting on attacks is “fragmented and incomplete”, in part because the FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) both claim to have the “one stop” website for reporting attacks – respectively, IC3....

Please tell us a little bit about your background and current position at DataVisor. I received my Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University with my thesis in network security. After graduating, I joined Microsoft Silicon Valley, and it was there that I met Fang Yu, with whom I later founded DataVisor in December 2013. At Microsoft, we collaborated on network security and then moved on to application level security where we worked with a variety of applications including Bing, Hotmail, Azure, e-commerce payments and application level fraud issues....

It’s the same technology that Google uses to provide Project Shield, a free service from Google parent Alphabet that protects human rights, government and media organizations against DDoS attacks. According to a report by cybersecurity researchers at Netscout, there were 5.4 million recorded DDoS attacks during the first half of 2021 – a figure that represents an 11% rise compared with the same period last year. A DDoS attack is a crude but effective form of cyberattack that sees attackers flood the network or servers of the victim with a wave of internet traffic that’s so large that the infrastructure is overwhemed by the number of requests for access, slowing down services or taking them fully offline and preventing legitimate users from accessing the service at all....

The DOJ also said it arrested 34-year-old Ilya Lichtenstein and his 31-year-old wife Heather Morgan for their role in attempting to launder 119,754 bitcoin that were stolen during the attack on the Hong Kong exchange. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco called the seizure the “department’s largest financial seizure ever.” In total, about $4.5 billion was stolen from the exchange, and two brothers, Eli and Assaf Gigi, were arrested by Israeli authorities in 2019 for their involvement in the attack....

Dominoes, from end to end A few vendors see MLOps as encompassing all of the above. Microsoft at one point had considered buying Slack, according to reports, but instead decided to launch its own Slack collaboration competitor, Microsoft Teams, starting with a beta in 2016. Late last year, Microsoft software-as-a-service rival Salesforce ended up buying Slack for nearly $28 billion. Microsoft has made Teams available as part of its Microsoft 365/Office 365 plans for no additional cost.
