In Meta’s annual 10-K filing [PDF] to US regulators, the company wrote: “If a new transatlantic data transfer framework is not adopted … we will likely be unable to offer a number of our most significant products and services, including Facebook and Instagram, in Europe....

The genre of multi-modality, as these neural networks are called, is seeing a flurry of activity in which different data, such as image, text, and speech audio, are passed through the same algorithm to produce a score on different tests such as image recognition, natural language understanding, or speech detection. And these ambidextrous networks are racking up scores on benchmark tests of AI. The latest achievement is what’s called “data2vec,” developed by researchers at the AI division of Meta (parent of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp)....

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced plans to make coding “in plain English” easier by integrating OpenAI’s GPT-3 AI model with Microsoft’s PowerFx low code language.

The Microsoft work productivity software still works if you bought a license in the past 13 years, but Office 2013, Office 2010, and Office 2007 won’t get patches anymore or already don’t. Microsoft wants to know how many Windows PCs are still running these old versions from before the days of cloud productivity apps and is doing it via an optional Windows update which launched last month. “This update is intended to help Microsoft identify the number of users who are running out-of-support (or soon to be out-of-support) versions of Office, including Office 2013, Office 2010, and Office 2007,” Microsoft says in a document detailing its update KB502175....

SwiftKey is a free predictive keyboard app meant to help mobile users type faster. It uses an algorithm, built by analyzing large amounts of text, to predict what you are trying to type, and what you will want to type next using AI/natural language processing technology. Microsoft is planning to continue to support SwiftKey on Android for the foreseeable future.

If you have a Mac but haven’t installed Apple’s May 16 security updates for macOS, you should now, according to the Microsoft 365 Defender Research Team. The App Sandbox flaw is tracked as CVE-2022-26706. “We encourage macOS users to install these security updates as soon as possible. We also want to thank the Apple product security team for their responsiveness in fixing this issue,” writes Jonathan Bar Or of the Microsoft 365 Defender Research Team....

Jakub Vavra, Threat Operations Analyst at cybersecurity firm Avast, discovered the campaign, which involved 151 malicious apps. These apps were available “at one point or another” on the Google Play Store. According to Vavra, the infected apps have been downloaded over 10.5 million times to date. Vavra also said the apps are nearly identical, and they all aim to sign up users to the SMS service. The campaign appears to be global, and the malicious apps cover a wide range of categories....

Mozilla used data from haveibeenpwned.com to figure out the most common passwords found in breached datasets. Superman showed up in 368,397 breaches, Batman was featured in 226,327 breaches, and Spider-Man was found in 160,030 breaches. Wolverine and Ironman were also seen in thousands of breaches. “A password is like a key to your house. In the online world, your password keeps your house of personal information safe, so it’s important to make sure it’s strong,” a Mozilla spokesperson said....

NBN committed to providing the two-year bundle discount in its 2019 pricing review due to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and industry calling for price reductions on entry-level wholesale products. Dubbed FamousSparrow by ESET, on Thursday, the team said that the advanced persistent threat (APT) group – many of whom are state-sponsored – is a new entry to the cyberespionage space. Believed to have been active since at least 2019, the APT has been linked to attacks against governments, international organizations, engineering firms, legal companies, and the hospitality sector. Victims are located in Europe, the United Kingdom, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Burkina Faso in West Africa, and the Americas – including Brazil, Canada, and Guatemala....

The new Chat button in Windows 11 began rolling out earlier this week for Windows Insiders on the Dev channel. The button is part of the Windows 11 Taskbar and replaces the Skype Meet Now button from Windows 10. Users on the Dev Channel can install Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.100. Dev channel users can click the Chat icon in the taskbar (or press the WIN+C shortcut) to see the most recent Teams conversations or start a new chat or call....
