LendingTree released the results of its survey on Thursday, revealing that 30% of Americans saw an increase in credit card debt over the last two years, driven primarily by inflation and loss of income. In the study, conducted with data from 1,249 consumers, 48% of consumers indicated that inflation led to the increase in credit card debt, while 34% said income loss was the largest driving factor. The study also found that 30% of consumers were able to increase their credit score during the same two-year period....
For the period ending March 31, the Australian arm of Chinese PC maker continued with strong hardware sales, which helped it gain AU$942 million in revenue, while the remainder of achieved through activities including the provisioning of service and extended warranty. Specifically, revenue accrued from notebooks made up just over half of total revenue, coming in at AU$531 million, followed by desktop at AU$105 million. The platform’s CEO, Ryan Roslansky, announced the policy change in a LinkedIn post, citing some new learnings from the past months suggesting that employees wish to decide where they work for themselves. The US Department of Justice says Maksim Berezan, a 37-year-old from Estonia, took part in at least 13 ransomware attacks, including seven against American businesses, which cost victims over $53 million in losses. Berezan was an active member of an online forum designed for Russian-speaking cyber criminals to gather and exchange their criminal knowledge, tools, and services, the DoJ said. Microsoft has warned that one cyber-criminal gang has used an unpatched Exchange Server to gain entry to a target organization to deploy the notorious BlackCat/ALPHV ransomware. The company provides a case study of one cyber-criminal gang using Exchange Server flaws in BlackCat ransomware attacks as well as an overview of multiple ransomware gangs that previously used other ransomware. The news surrounding HoloLens lately has not been positive. Microsoft has encountered issues in getting its augmented reality technology to work well enough to satisfy the U.S. Army – with which it has a contract worth $22 billion for headsets using some of the HoloLens technology. Microsoft’s decision to focus HoloLens on the enterprise market, not the consumer one, reportedly has caused rifts inside the team and led, at least in part, to hundreds of those working on HoloLens to leave Microsoft and join other AR/VR companies....

A number of people on the MLX team who worked on Family Safety, Microsoft’s parental-control service, are posting that their jobs were eliminated, but I hear (at least for now) the Family Safety product is not being dropped. In fact, Microsoft designated Family Safety as an “inbox app” for Windows 11 earlier this year. The MLX job cuts follow the company’s decision to curb hiring in its Office and Windows divisions and cut 1% of its 180,000-plus person workforce in July....
The AI model has 105 layers, 530 billion parameters, and operates on chunky supercomputer hardware like Selene. By comparison, the vaunted GPT-3 has 175 billion parameters. “Each model replica spans 280 NVIDIA A100 GPUs, with 8-way tensor-slicing within a node, and 35-way pipeline parallelism across nodes,” the pair said in a blog post. The model was trained on 15 datasets that contained 339 billion tokens, and was capable of showing how larger models need less training to operate well....
