The keyboard is, from top to bottom, designed to feel premium and to compete with the best retail keyboards and even some custom mechanical keyboards. What might look like a relatively typical keyboard from the outside hides several features that elevate it above competing options from the big boys....

First reported by The Verge, the unsealed court document was submitted as part of Epic Game’s lawsuit against Google in the United States. Epic Games has a similar lawsuit filed against Google in Australia. In the document [PDF], Epic claims Google was threatened by its plans to sidestep Google’s official Play Store commission by distributing Fortnite through other channels. To address those concerns, Google allegedly considered buying “some or all of Epic Games” to remove the games developer as a competitor....

Google said it decided to invest in the underlying platform after seeing 4.8 billion apps installed in Google Workspace and more than 5,300 public apps in the Google Workspace Marketplace. “Developers have been able to build applications that integrate with Gmail, Drive, and Docs for years. And today, we’re announcing significant enhancements to the Google Workspace platform by making it just as easy for developers to build applications and integrate with Google Meet, Chat and Spaces,” Google explained....

The Tau virtual machines are the “best price-performance in the industry for scale-out applications,” said Google Cloud vice president of infrastructure Sachin Gupta in an interview with ZDNet. Scale-out applications, in this case, can include internet applications such as the kind that might be run by social media. Twitter and Snap are debut customers who were quoted lauding the qualities of the Tau VMs. Snap and Twitter use the VMs with containers, as Google provides its Google Kubernetes Engine running on top of the instances....

Deploying these programs has been a serious challenge for state and local governments. For instance, recent Treasury Department data showed that just a fraction of the $46.5 billion allocated by Congress for housing assistance has been spent. Given the scale and complexity of these programs, state and local governments are often bogged down by technical infrastructure that can’t meet their needs. Google Cloud is aiming to step in and help alleviate those issues with a new series of “public benefits solutions” – a suite of Google tools and capabilities packaged together for specific social services challenges....

Google disclosed that it had patched the two high-severity zero-day flaws in release notes for the stable release of Chrome version 95.0.4638.69 for Windows, Mac and Linux. Any version number higher than that will have the fixes. It’s a good idea to check out Google’s support page for Chrome updates, which explains how Chrome can be set to automatically update when patches become available. Otherwise, Chrome has an ‘Update’ button that is coloured red if an update is at least a week old, indicating that it should be installed....

According to CNBC, Google Cloud Platform will reduce the commission it takes from Google Cloud Marketplace app store sales from 20% to 3%. Google’s launch of the Pixel 5a had, on the Richter scale of surprises, all the force of a pebble being tossed into a lake by a four-year-old. The cloud vendor’s Asia-Pacific cloud regions include Singapore, Indonesia, and South Korea, each comprising three zones. There are two cloud regions each in Japan, Australia, and India. The three new regions also will each have three zones to safeguard against service disruptions, and will be supported by Google’s existing interconnect locations in Auckland, Bangkok, as well as Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya. DDoS attacks are a relatively simple, but potent, form of cyberattack in which cyber criminals overload services with web traffic, slowing them down or taking them offline entirely, preventing others from being able to use them. The attacks can range from short campaigns that last a few minutes to attacks strung out over extended periods of time. These attacks often rely on malware-infected computers, servers and Internet of Things devices being connected into a botnet, which then overwhelms the target of the DDoS with web traffic....

The makers of Poly Network, a “DeFi” or decentralized finance platform that works across blockchains, said on Tuesday that an attacker stole about $600 million in cryptocurrencies. The team behind Poly Network appealed to the hackers to “return the hacked assets”. “The amount of money you hacked is the biggest one in defi history. Law enforcement in any country will regard this as a major economic crime and you will be pursed....

The latter figure was higher than their counterparts in the Americas, 41% of whom were similarly more concerned than before about their organisation’s ability to mitigate cyber threats, revealed EY’s 2021 Global Information Security Survey. Conducted in March and May this year, the study polled 1,010 respondents worldwide, with 20% from Asia-Pacific, 36% in the Americas, and the remaining 43% from Europe, Middle East, India, and Africa (EMEIA). Just 20% in Asia-Pacific said the cybersecurity teams were part of the planning stage of any digital transformation initiative, the study found....

Research by security think tank the Ponemon Institute and cybersecurity company DTEX Systems suggests that over half of companies find it impossible or very difficult to prevent insider attacks. These businesses are missing indicators that something might be wrong. Those include unusual amounts of files being opened, attempts to use USB devices, staff purposefully circumventing security controls, masking their online activities, or moving and saving files to unusual locations. All these and more might suggest that a user is planning malicious activity, including the theft of company data....
