The Australian insurance group said its IT systems were taken offline for planned “maintenance” works that involved IT security advisors from Microsoft. The US nonprofit, which is known for testing consumer products, asked what steps can be taken to help usher in “memory safe” languages, like Rust, over options such as C and C++. Consumer Reports said it wanted to address “industry-wide threats that cannot be solved through user behavior or even consumer choice” and it identified “memory unsafety” as one such issue. The report, Future of Memory Safety, looks at range of issues, including challenges in building memory safe language adoption within universities, levels of distrust for memory safe languages, introducing memory safe languages to code bases written in other languages, and also incentives and public accountability....

The new advanced feature is generally available in Microsoft Authenticator and should help counter attacks on MFA that rely on push notification spam. Researchers earlier this year spotted so-called ‘MFA fatigue attacks’ on Office 365 users, where attackers repeatedly trigger MFA push notifications while trying to log in to a victim’s account with an already compromised password. The attacker hopes at some point the victim is worn down or distracted enough by the notifications to accidentally approve the login attempt....

On Wednesday, Guardicore Labs’ AVP of Security Research Amit Serper published the results of an analysis of Autodiscover, a protocol used to authenticate to Microsoft Exchange servers and to configure client access. There are different iterations of the protocol available for use. Guardicore explored an implementation of Autodiscover based on POX XML and found a “design flaw” that can be exploited to ’leak’ web requests to Autodiscover domains outside of a user’s domain, as long as they were in the same top-level domain (TLD)....
