On Friday morning, three Federal court judges granted Epic Games’ appeal, which had sought to recommence a lawsuit that accuses Apple of misusing its market power to substantially lessen competition in the app distribution and payments market. Epic Games said it was pleased with the outcome and would continue to fight for increased competition in this space. “This is a positive step forward for Australian consumers and developers who are entitled to fair access and competitive pricing across mobile app stores....

In his new role, Dienstmann will be leading the company’s business in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay. The executive will report directly to Arun Bansal, president of the company for the Europe and Latin America region. Prior to joining Ericsson, Dienstmann held senior roles at software development and operations firms Mobicare and Akross. Before that, he served as a chief operating officer at Vivo, the largest telecommunications operator in Brazil, and acted as chief executive at Cisco Brazil....

1.3 Billion Fake Accounts The number of fake accounts on Facebook’s platform hoovers around 5% of the total number of monthly active users. Facebook’s aim is to remove as many fake accounts as they can, while removing as few authentic accounts as possible in the process. Alarmingly, the prevalence of fake accounts is still rising. On the other hand, the number of fake accounts Facebook is taking down is increasing as well....

Messenger and Instagram chats are on the same platform these days, reflecting the company’s push to unify its messaging products and aligning them with WhatsApp, where E2EE is the default, based on Signal’s E2EE protocol. In April, Facebook said that Messenger and Instagram direct messages wouldn’t be “fully end-to-end encrypted until sometime in 2022 at the earliest”. The first settlement is in relation to a lawsuit raised late last year by the DoJ, which accused Facebook of knowingly favouring H1-B and other temporary visa holders over US-based job applicants for more than 2,600 positions across a near two-year-span. According to the department’s lawsuit, Facebook “used recruiting methods designed to deter US workers from applying to certain positions, such as requiring applications to be submitted by mail only; refused to consider US workers who applied to the positions; and hired only temporary visa holders” for these positions....

The company – which recently adopted the new name of “Meta” – made the announcement in its “October 2021 Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior Report.” Facebook says that in October, it removed: 937 Facebook accounts, 363 Instagram accounts, 140 pages and 24 groups connected to the campaign. All of the accounts, pages and groups were allegedly connected to people in Nicaragua. They called it “one of the most cross-government troll operations we’ve disrupted to date,” and said multiple state entities were involved....

The rules state that carriers will need to have under 10 million customers and allow for the possibility of some schools, libraries, and health care providers gaining access to funds if they provide broadband services. For the purposes of the program, equipment would need to be capable of speeds above 200kbps in either direction. “The reimbursement program will reimburse eligible providers of advanced communications services for costs reasonably incurred for the removal, replacement, and disposal of their Huawei and ZTE equipment and services obtained on or before June 30, 2020,” the FCC said....

The approval comes more than half a year after the federal government agreed to the settlement with law firm Gordon Legal, which was the legal representative for the hundreds of thousands of robo-debt victims. With the settlement being approved, Centrelink will now pay AU$112 million in compensation to approximately 400,000 members of the class action, including legal costs. The compensation is on top of the government also refunding AU$751 million in repayments of invalid debts and withdrawing claims for around AU$1....
