More than 20 service providers launched 5G standalone networks last year, with twice the number expected to follow suit in 2022, according to Ericsson’s latest mobility report. 5G subscriptions climbed 70 million in the first quarter of 2022 to reach 620 million. China saw the most net additions for the quarter at 16 million, followed by the US at 4 million and Bangladesh at 3 million. Ericsson noted that it had revised its 2022 projections downwards by some 100 million due to weaker economic conditions and uncertainties over the Ukraine war....

The new “integrated view” for Gmail is intended to make it “easy to move between critical applications like Gmail, Chat and Meet in one unified location”, according to Google. The redesigned layout adds a slim application column on the left-hand side of the screen with shortcut icons to switch between Mail, Chat, Spaces, and Meet. It’s topped by an expandable hamburger menu. To the right of the new column is the standard Gmail labels menu for access to Inbox, Starred, Snoozed and so forth....

Last month, the US Department of Commerce added NSO Group to its “entity list”, largely banning it from US markets due to evidence it supplied spyware to foreign governments that used it to target government officials, journalists, business people, activists, academics, and embassy workers. In late November, Apple filed for a permanent injunction banning NSO from using any of its software, services or devices. Now Google’s Project Zero (GPZ) has analyzed a relatively new NSO ‘zero-click’ exploit for iOS 14....

The new version of ‘google-cloud-logging’, v3.0 on GitHub, gives Python developers real-time insights into the performance of an application hosted on Google Cloud’s compute infrastructure. Now Google has improved the way it displays quoted search results in snippets by basing them on where a quoted word or phrase occurs in a page. Google made the changes based on feedback from Search users who do quoted searches such as “Google search” to find a page with that exact phrase. “We’ve heard feedback that people doing quoted searches value seeing where the quoted material occurs on a page, rather than an overall description of the page....

“This pilot will help us to increase our understanding of whether and how user choice billing works for users in different countries and for developers of different sizes and categories,” Google said in a blog post. According to Spotify, the pilot between the two companies represents a “first-of-its-kind option in payment choice” and forms part of a “multi-year agreement”. Users who have downloaded Spotify from the Google Play Store will be presented with a choice to pay with either Spotify’s payment system or with Google Play Billing, with the two payments options to live “side by side” in the app, Spotify explained....

Google Research and Alphabet-owned Everyday Robots integrate what they call ‘SayCan’ (language models with real-world grounding in pre-trained skills) and its largest language model – PaLM, or Pathways Language Model. This combination, called PaLM-SayCan, shows a path forward for simplifying human-to-robot communications and improving robotic task performance. “PaLM can help the robotic system process more complex, open-ended prompts and respond to them in ways that are reasonable and sensible,” explains Vincent Vanhoucke, distinguished scientist and head of robotics at Google Research....

In total, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has identified a total of 4,151 retailers that had been compromised by hackers attempting to exploit vulnerabilities on checkout pages to divert payments and steal details.
